First-Timer’s Guide to Island Hopping in Greece

From the sunsets of Santorini to the hidden coves of Milos, here is how to navigate the Cyclades like a pro.

There is nothing quite like the contrast of whitewashed buildings against the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. But with over 200 inhabited islands, planning a Greek getaway can feel overwhelming.

1. Choose Your Hub

Most travelers start in Athens. Spend 48 hours soaking up the history of the Acropolis before catching a high-speed ferry from Piraeus port to the islands.

2. The Ferry Strategy

Book your ferries in advance during the peak summer months (June–August). Use the larger car ferries if you’re prone to seasickness, as they are much more stable than the smaller catamarans.

3. Pack Light

Those charming cobblestone streets and steep stairs in Oia weren't designed for massive rolling suitcases. A sturdy travel backpack or a small carry-on will save your back (and your pride).
